Book Description – SQL Performance Explained pdf

SQL Performance Explained pdf – SQL Speed Explained is a resource for database developers who want to increase database performance. The emphasis is on SQL, and it covers all major SQL databases without becoming bogged down in the specifics of any one product. SQL Performance Explained walks, developers, through all components of a SQL statement and highlights the drawbacks of object-relational mapping (ORM) solutions like Hibernate, starting with the foundations of indexing and the WHERE clause.

Topics covered include:

  • Using multi-column indexes
  •  Correctly applying SQL functions
  •  Efficient use of LIKE queries
  •  Optimizing join operations
  •  Clustering data to improve performance
  •  Pipelined execution of ORDER BY and GROUP BY
  •  Getting the best performance for pagination queries
  •  Understanding the scalability of databases

This is an excellent book for learning what happens “behind the scenes” while you code in SQL. You will be better equipped to optimize queries once you have gained this knowledge. Optimizing SQL, or writing performant queries, is something that every database developer should know, but it’s not something I’ve seen taught in any SQL class I’ve seen, or if it is, it’s always taught in such an RDBMS-specific way that it’s difficult to apply the knowledge to other databases, or it’s taught so academically that it’s hard to know how any of it applies. This book covers SQL in general, but it also provides real examples from a variety of popular databases. It also spends time explaining the differences between different implementations, primarily Oracle, which is something that many basic SQL courses seem to avoid.

About the Author

The SQL Renaissance Ambassador is Markus Winand. He’s on a quest to teach developers about SQL’s growth in the twenty-first century. Winand. at can be used to employ Markus as a trainer, speaker, or consultant. The author speaks in plain English, and it appears that the book is aimed mostly at those who are unfamiliar with performance issues. Non-beginners, on the other hand, may profit from the book’s intriguing scenarios for investigating and resolving performance issues.
