A command of regular expressions is a vital talent, as this book demonstrates. Regular expressions enable you to program intricate and delicate text processing that you never thought was possible. Regular expressions can help you save time and effort. They may be utilized to come up with elegant answers to a variety of issues. Regular expressions will become an indispensable element of your toolset once you’ve learned them. You’ll be left wondering how you ever managed without them.

Regular expressions, despite their widespread availability, versatility, and unrivaled power, are routinely neglected. What is power in the hands of an expert, however, may be dangerous to the unwary. Mastering Regular Expressions will guide you through the minefield of regular expressions and help you improve your usage of them.

In addition to increased PHP coverage in the essential “core” chapters, Mastering Regular Expressions, Third Edition now contains an entire chapter devoted to PHP and its powerful and expressive array of regular expression capabilities. This version has also been updated to reflect advancements in other languages, including a more in-depth treatment of Sun’s java.util.regex package, which has become the standard Java regex implementation. The following are some of the topics covered:

  • A comparison of features in various versions of various languages and tools.
  • What is the regular expression engine and how does it work?
  • (There are significant discounts to be had here!)
  • Matching exactly what you want while avoiding what you don’t want
  • Individual language sections and chapters

Mastering Regular Expressions, Third Edition, written in the straightforward, amusing tone that makes a hard, dry topic crystal apparent to programmers, and studded with answers to challenging real-world issues, provides a wealth of material that you can put to immediate use.

About the Author

Jeffrey Friedl grew up in the countryside of Rootstown, Ohio, and dreamed of becoming an astronomer until he came across an unused TRS-80 Model I in the chemistry lab one day (bristling with a full 16K of RAM, no less). In 1980, he started using Unix (and regular expressions), and he went on to get degrees in Computer Science from Kent (BS) and the University of New Hampshire (MS) (MS). He spent eight years developing kernels for Omron Corporation in Kyoto, Japan, before relocating to Silicon Valley in 1997 to apply his regular-expression expertise to financial news and data for a startup called “Yahoo!”

When he has spare time, Jeffrey likes playing Ultimate Frisbee and basketball with his Yahoo! colleagues, programming his home, and feeding the squirrels and jays in his backyard. He also likes spending time with his wife Fumie and working on their first “software project” together, which will be released in the Fall of 2002.chemistry lab one day (bristling with a full 16K of RAM, no less).
